Based in the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health, SERC has research links with a range of professional teams, public bodies, and universities both nationally and internationally.
SERC aims to:
- Promote contemporary research in the area of sport and exercise
- Provide a focus and identity for research in sport and exercise
- Provide an academic home for research students in sport and exercise and promote research degree opportunities
- Exploit potential to bid for funding for research in exercise and sport
- Embed research activity within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health and beyond
- Provide a point of contact for external collaborators, and develop a network of associated staff
SERC conducts research in a wide range of sport, exercise and health-related areas, incluing the sociology and psychology of sport. For full details, see below.
The Centre acts as a research hub for the Department and a home for research students. The centre offers MPhil/PhD programmes to highly qualified individuals with a keen interest in the research topics above, which can be self-funded or supported via fully and match-funded scholarships. Students are able to study part-time or full-time in a range of areas and are supported by expert academic staff.

SERC research strands
Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing
The Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing research group aims to deliver accessible research that is of practical importance.
The research group is a dynamic hub of leading academics and researchers working together to identify and solve pertinent health challenges, both locally and globally. It aims to collaborate with public and private stakeholders, industry groups, policy makers and funding agencies to improve our understanding and knowledge of the relationships between physical activity and health across the lifespan.
A primary focus of the group is to examine the acute and chronic effects of physical activity on physiological, biomechanical and psycho-social health outcomes in a range of clinical conditions (e.g, patients with cardio- or cerebrovascular [stroke, transient ischaemic attack] disease). With cross-sectional, longitudinal and interventional studies being at the forefront of our research strategy, the research group aims to make a significant and innovative contribution to the academic community whilst also providing ecological and pragmatic benefits to the local community.
An important new inititative within this strand is HELP Hampshire. The Health-Enhancing Lifestyle Programme (HELP) for Stroke in Hampshire is a community-based exercise and education clinic designed to improve the health and quality of life of stroke survivors.
A HELP Hampshire Stroke clinic is currently in the planning stages. The clinic will consist of an 8-week personalised exercise programme, with participants advised to take part in at least two group-based sessions each week. Stroke survivors will be referred to the clinic from Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and local GP and physiotherapy practices. The exercise sessions will be complemented with online educational material.
HELP Hampshire hopes to expand to offer a range of clinics including paediatric and cardiac, a falls clinic and a healthy ageing clinic.
For HELP Hampshire to be a viable and sustainable community project, donations and/or sponsorship from local industry partners are essential. We are therefore currently seeking donations and sponsors to support the clinic.

Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology
This group provides the focus for psychology-related research, consultancy and education. The group is currently engaged in the provision of professional consultancy services to a wide range of clients, and is also engaged in a diverse range of research projects focussed on sport exercise/health and performance settings.
The group offers opportunities for postgraduates to join either as research students or as trainees towards either British Psychological Society Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology Stage 2 recognition, or through British Association of Sport and Exercise Psychology (BASES)-supervised experience.
The ability to perform effectively is a key requirement of sport and exercise at all levels. While the level and associated measures of success may change, the ability to perform by applying the right solutions to specific problems is of paramount importance. This is true whether you are designing optimal training programmes to win Olympic medals, purchasing the right golf clubs that complement your golf swing, effectively referring patients to specific exercise and physical activity programmes, or being motivated to go out for a walk.
In each of these cases contemporary knowledge is crucial to ensure that the right decisions are made to ensure successful outcomes. A key aim of research in this area is to enhance understanding of the factors that determine performance in both sport and exercise. It specifically encompasses the sport and exercise science disciplines of physiology, psychology, nutrition and biomechanics, and increasingly a combination of each of these disciplines.
As a result, the focus of this strand of SERC is to advance knowledge about sport and exercise science to help serve the future of elite performance and the wider community.
Sport Coaching and Sport Pedagogy
The Sport Coaching and Sport Pedagogy research group engages in international research with the aim of expanding knowledge relevant to sport coaching and sport education. Our research is often undertaken from a pragmatic perspective with the aim of discovering best pedagogic practice in sport and physical activity. We aim to make our research accessible to practitioners.
The research group has a multi-faceted agenda from the delivery practice of coaches in hockey, rugby and cycling to the educational practices of tutors in higher education. Previous and current projects have focussed on the student higher education experience, assessment within sport programmes, coaching philosophy and the use of social media in secondary physical education teacher training. We are particularly interested in fostering creativity and innovation in sport coaching and physical education teaching.

As a newly established research strand, we are still in the process of developing collaborations and getting research projects off the ground. Our first project is in collaboration with the Institute of Sport and Adventure at Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin, New Zealand and Eastern Illinois University, USA. We are conducting a pedagogical study looking into the student expectations in sport, exercise and physical activity degree courses with a view to making international comparisons that might aid in improving the student experience.
Sport and Society
The Sport and Society research group engages in world-leading research for improving social engagement with sport and physical exercise, and enhancing sporting performance through the application of contemporary knowledge. Our research is accessible and has practical implications. Our scholars engage with sports teams, organisations and the media in order to promote our mission. The research group examines a variety of issues that are related to social and cultural aspects of sport. There are two main socio-cultural research agendas in operation within this research strand.
The first dimension of this issues-based socio-cultural research agenda relates to issues of sexuality, gender and inclusivity in organised, competitive team sports. Professor Anderson leads this research agenda, where he, colleagues and postgraduate students examine the relationship between gay and lesbian athletes in sport, the changing nature of masculinity and the impact of heterosexism in sport and education.
The second dimension relates to issues of globalisation and national identity in sport. Dr Tuck leads this research agenda which examines sporting patriotism, how sports build national feelings and reflect national character, and the representation of elite sportspeople as national symbols. Contributors to the research centre are also interested in themes related to the history of sport, sports law, sports development and the commercial nature of sport.
